Pont avignon

City of Popes

During the 14th century, Avignon became the capital of the Catholic Church for 70 years when a number of Popes settled here. Thanks to these few decades placing this town of the Provence at the centre of the world, Avignon has gained a rare heritage including the Pope Palace and the famous bridge that crosses the Rhône river. However, do not limit your visit to these two emblematic sites and make sure you also stroll around in the old town centre hiding behind the medieval walls.
